Downtown Developments

The demand for new housing units in downtown Macon continues to rise with occupancy rates above 90%. According to a recent analysis by Laurie Volk of Zimmerman/Volk Associates, Macon has the potential to add 1,175 new units in the downtown area over the next five years, with more than half of the residents of those units moving to downtown from outside Bibb County.
The next phase in downtown’s resurgence hinges on adding enough apartments to meet the demand. NewTown recently partnered with the Bibb County Board of Commissioners and the Development Authority of Bibb County to issue $5 million in bonds that will provide the equity required for stalled residential projects. Each proposed project is examined by an oversight committee, who then selects the projects best suited for bond funding.
